Leviathan Wakes review
“Stars are better off without us.”
Leviathan Wakes is a 2011 science fiction novel by James S. A. Corey (pen name of Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck).
This science fiction mistery is a part of the Expanse series of books written by James S.A. Corey.
The following books have been published:
The Butcher of Anderson Station, Leviathan Wakes, Caliban's War, Abaddon's Gate ,Cibola Burn, Nemesis Games and Babylon's Ashes that appeared as soon as December 6, 2016. 3 more books have been announced so this is a pretty big series. The Butcher of Anderson Station was written after the first 2 books so you can read it first or you can read Leviathan Wakes directly.
Getting down to the nitty-gritty of it, this is not your ordinary sf book, as it mixes space opera ,noir and horror elements. I'll admit I was attracted by the space opera, but I found myself enjoying the detective story most!
“I don’t believe war ever does. It’s a madness that’s in our nature. Sometimes it recurs; sometimes it subsides.” “Sounds like a disease.” “The herpes simplex of the species?”
The action takes place somewhere in the future after humanity has started colonizing the solar system and describes some of the struggles facing humanity as it tries to reach for the stars. The book has a rather pessimist outlook on humanity uniting once it colonises the solar system. The characters do not lack depth, unlike some other sci-fi books where you have a majority of one-dimensional characters.
There is a Dune reference in the book. Being a huge Dune fans I really appreciated it.
“First off, get your shit together. Panic doesn’t help. It never helps. Deep breaths, figure this out, make the right moves. Fear is the mind-killer. Ha. Geek.”
There's also a really good TV show The Expanse made by scyfy that is currently on it's second season. It's not the same and I feel Miller lacks some of the complexity found in the book, but it's good nonetheless.
As a noir sci-fi book, the only one I found better is "Altered Carbon" of the Takeshi Kovaks series by Richard K. Morgan.
It's pretty easy to make things explode in a space battle, you know it's a good book when you care more about the character's problems than about the explosions.
Pros:
- Read it if you are a fan of the noir sub-genre.
- Good detective mistery thrown in with noir accents.
- Good writing, I was genuinely surprised because some parts really stand out!
- Dune reference!
- There's a TV show about it if you're lazy and don't want to read the books.
Cons:
- A little slow to pick up steam at first. Doesn't draw you in immediately.
Score: 8.5 out of 10.
